Ken and Susan’s remodeling project is a family/laundry room addition onto the back of their 1927 cape cod. The design, by Heartwood Construction’s featured designer Mark Collin, uses architectural elements of the existing house like a steep pitched gable roof, shallow eaves, nine lite muntin windows, matching siding and matching interior and exterior trim. This is Heartwood Constructions’ first Green Built Home certified addition and includes many “green remodeling” features such as: reclaimed maple hardwood flooring; re-using two stained glass windows from the existing house; advanced air sealing techniques on exterior walls; R-28 exterior wall insulation; R-60 ceiling insulation; closed-cell spray foam insulation in all addition box sills; Forest Stewardship Council certified lumber used for framing lumber; two foot on center stud placement with a single top plate to minimize lumber use; Trex decking (made from 50% recycled plastic bags and 50% reclaimed wood; and a Home Performance with Energy Star home energy evaluation.
